Vedic Subtraction

Hello!
In this chapter, you will learn basic Vedic Subtraction to make your subtraction skills faster!

Some basic principles you should know-
1. Balancing rule. If you do not know this, please click on this and read it thoroughly.

2. Complimentary Numbers. (pairs of natural numbers which add up to 10)
    1 & 9
    2 & 8
    3 & 7
    4 & 6

    and lastly, the lonely 5.

3. Single Digit Subtraction and Addition

Now, lets start with Vedic Subtraction

i. 9 - 2. Of Course, this is pretty easy. But one thing to know here is that when the first number (9) is greater than or equal to the second number (2), we call it a Match Pair.

ii. 43 - 29

As you can see in the above picture, the circled pair of numbers (4 & 2) is a match pair, whereas the boxed pair of numbers (3 & 9) is a Mismatch Pair. A mismatch pair is the exact opposite of a match pair.

Having known that, we can move on to solving some problems.

1. 52 - 38
In Vedic Subtraction, we subtract from the left to right instead of the conventional right to left.
We also need to check whether the next pair of numbers (the one to the right) is a match or a mismatch. In this case, the first pair is a match but the one to its right is a mismatch.
Whenever this happens, we subtract the first pair of numbers normally (5 - 3) which will give us 2. But because the next pair of numbers is a mismatch, we will subtract 1 from it, which leaves us with 1. Write down 1 and move on to the next pair of numbers (2 - 8).
This part is the most important. Now, as the pair is a mismatch, we need to know the compliment of the second number of the pair (8), which we know is 2 NOT because it is the other number in the pair but because the numbers add up to 10. Now the compliment of 8 is to be added to the first number (2) to give us 4. We should now write 4 to the right of 1 which we already wrote down and should be happy about finishing the subtraction.

2. 6447 - 3157
Starting from the left, we have-
6 - 3 is a match pair
4 - 1 is a match pair
4 - 5 is a mismatch pair
7 - 7 is a match pair

6 - 3 = 3
4 - 1 = 3, but the next pair is mismatch so we subtract 1 to get 2
4 - 5 --> the compliment of 5 is 5, and 4 + 5 is 9.
lastly, 7 - 7 = 0 to give us 3290 as our final answer!
